12 years after Super Typhoon Yolanda wreaked havoc in the island of Leyte, the students of Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) still remember experiencing the devastations of climate change firsthand.
During Klima Eskwela: Climate Science, Arts, and Action at their campus on November 27-28, the students shared the many ways Yolanda changed their perspective on the climate crisis.
True to its mission of driving the country’s low-carbon transition, The Climate Reality Project Philippines in partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE), has once again kickstarted its Choosing REnewables, an information campaign and public consultation on the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP) and other voluntary renewable energy mechanisms, to drive the private and public sector’s shift to clean energy.
Its first stop was at Clark, Pampanga, held at Quest Plus Conference Center last October 28.
In his past State of the Nation Addresses (SONA), President Marcos Jr. has repeatedly cast himself as a champion of climate action, placing renewable energy “at the top of [his] climate agenda”.
He has previously pledged to raise renewables’ share in the power mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040, backed by nearly P3 trillion in green-lane certified investments. Yet since he took office in 2022, renewable energy’s share has stagnated at around 22%.
After five transformative years as Branch Manager of Climate Reality Philippines, Nazrin Castro transitions to an advisory role. During her tenure, the number of Climate Reality Leaders in the Philippines tripled, and groundbreaking programs in renewable energy, plastic reduction, sustainable mobility, climate finance, and youth empowerment made significant headway. She departs confident in the organization’s continued growth and success.
The Green Energy Option Program (GEOP) is driving significant financial and environmental gains for businesses, achieving an impressive 98% retention rate in 2024. With companies benefiting from lower electricity costs and reduced carbon emissions, GEOP is proving to be a game-changer in the country’s transition to clean energy.
