In our Manila Bulletin column Eleventh Hour this week, Pinoy Climate Reality Leader Justin Paolo Interno wrote about how climate change has impacted Amadeo, Cavite—once the country’s top coffee producer.

Justin had the rare opportunity to get a grasp of the situation from the coffee farmers in Amadeo while working as a research assistant in the quaint town last year: The concept of climate change remains a buzzword for farmers, but they are trying to adapt to its varying circumstances. Had they been capacitated early on dealing with the impacts of climate change, they could have preserved the once glorious coffee industry in their town.

New study on climate anxiety: 8 out of 10 young people worried about climate change

Eight out of ten children and young people across the world are worried that climate change is threatening people and the planet.

Forty-five percent globally reported that their feelings towards the prevailing climate crisis are having negative impacts on daily functioning, which include eating, concentrating, work, school, sleeping, spending time in nature, playing, having fun, and dealing with relationships.

In the Philippines, this number went up to a worrying 75 percent, with the report recognizing that young people in the Global South are experiencing more severe climate anxiety—which is defined by the American Psychiatric Association as “a chronic fear of environmental doom.”

In our Manila Bulletin column Eleventh Hour this week, Pinoy Climate Reality Leader Rachel Anne Herrera, a Commissioner in the Climate Change Commission, delved into why climate resilience is a critical election agenda.

As more and more aspirants for national and local elective positions are lodging their certificates of candidacy this week, Commissioner Rachel reminded the voting public of the need for more leaders who are knowledgeable or, at least, open to tackling climate and environmental issues, leaders who value science and insights from their constituents, and leaders who will prioritize funding for urgent climate change adaptation and mitigation measures.

In this election season, climate change should be on voters’ minds.

Climate Reality PH partners with East West Center to support youth-led climate solutions

From July to August 2021, the Youth Cluster of the Climate Reality Project Philippines, in partnership with East-West Center and Wavefarers, spearheaded and implemented “Project Niche: Claiming My Place in the Climate Space” with the goal of capacitating and inspiring budding climate advocates to become key players in local climate change action in their respective communities. It was opened to all budding young climate advocates who are currently taking their high school or college studies.
