To Kill a God

by Ava Arnejo

Take a deep breath of this blue,
Is this how we kill a God?
in wrestling, in killing, in destructing

Is this how we kill the ocean god?
With lips unmoving —
blind eyes turning

Is this how we kill a god?
With our food wrappers and our greed
And our disregard for common courtesy?

How does it feel to witness
the slow dying of the land and seas?
— one that was here before us
— one that will be here long after us

I am young, and my legs still carry me to shore
But when I am old, will I still get to
walk the edge of the tide line?
